GUIDE🏆Prop firm challenges, explained honestlyFree guide · 6 min read
What is a prop firm challenge?
A prop (“proprietary”) trading firm lets you trade a simulated account with a big balance, like $100,000, after you pay a fee and pass an evaluation called a challenge. You have to hit a profit target without breaking the loss limits. Pass and you get a funded (still simulated) account and can earn a share of the profits as a reward. Break a rule and the account ends and you lose the fee. It’s really a test of whether you can control your losses under pressure.
FTMO’s rules in plain English
FTMO’s published trading objectives as we read them on 12 October 2026. Rules and prices change, so always check ftmo.com before you buy.
| Rule | 2-Step | 1-Step |
|---|---|---|
| Profit target | 10%, then 5% (Verification) | 10% |
| Max daily loss | 5% of starting balance, from each day’s opening balance | 3% of starting balance, from each day’s opening balance |
| Max loss | 10%, fixed from the starting balance | 10%, trailing (moves up with your highest end-of-day balance) |
| Min trading days | 4 per phase | None listed |
| Consistency | None listed | Best day can’t be more than 50% of total profit |
| Reward | Up to 90% of simulated profits | Up to 90% of simulated profits |
Example, $100,000 2-Step: reach $110,000, then $105,000 in Verification. Equity can never drop below $90,000, and on any one day it can’t drop more than $5,000 below that day’s opening balance. FTMO’s day resets at midnight Central European time (11pm UK).
Cost: a one-off fee by account size, e.g. $10,000 – €89 (2-Step) / €79 (1-Step); $100,000 – €540 / €499 (FTMO’s standard prices on 12 Oct 2026). FTMO says it’s refunded with your first reward. Fail and you don’t get it back.
How to pass: the 1% plan
- Risk 1% or less per trade. With a 5% daily limit, 1% risk means five losses in a row in one day to break it. Many traders use 0.5% on a challenge.
- Work out your lot size every time with the risk calculator. Never guess.
- Set your own daily stop: stop after two losses or about 2% down. That keeps you well clear of the firm’s limit and stops revenge trading.
- Aim for 1:2 or better so you can lose more trades than you win and still grow.
- Write every trade down in the journal. Patterns like trading news candles or moving stops show up fast.
- No time limit, so slow down. Rushing with big lots is the most common way people fail.
All prices and numbers in these lessons are made-up examples to explain ideas. They are not forecasts or trade ideas.
